RSPB Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve

Nestled between Leeds, York and Wakefield, Fairburn Ings is truly a haven for people and wildlife alike.

There is something for the whole family, from wildlife trails to pond dipping; you can even take on the Wildlife Challenge. Why not recharge the batteries while the kids let off some steam in the play area?

Winding trails pass through woodland, wetland and grassland, offering the opportunity to see a wide spectrum of wildlife. Look out for the flash of blue as a kingfisher darts by, and listen for the ‘peewit’ of noisy lapwings. Damselflies and butterflies are everywhere in summer and fantastic fungi fills the reserve in autumn, keep an eye out for the famous red and white spotted fly agaric mushroom. Throughout the chillier months Fairburn fills with a whole host of overwintering swans, ducks and geese, so there is something to see whatever the season.

Pop into the visitor centre to watch wildlife up close and personal, chat to the friendly RSPB team and grab a cuppa. The shop in the visitor centre sells a range of refreshments, including sandwiches and hot and cold drinks, plus a wide range of RSPB products, from bird seed and feeders, to books and children’s toys.
