Situated in the picturesque village of Muker, in stunning Upper Swaledale, The Old School Gallery & Craftshop showcases the best regional and British art and crafts.
Polly and photographer Richard took over The Old School in April 2017 with a simple goal: to make The Old School Muker THE destination for artists, makers and art lovers in Swaledale and the wider Yorkshire Dales National Park. The gallery now represents the work of some of The North’s finest artists and makers, offering an ever evolving mix of styles and mediums including: traditional oils, watercolours, etchings, monotypes, lino and wood cut prints, digital prints, sculptural iron work, bronzes, glassware and landscape photography.
With an emphasis on hand-made products, The Craftshop stocks a wide range of local and British produced merchandise including: soft furnishings, ceramics, jewellery, felt-work, gifts, ironwork, cards and natural skin care products.
The Old School’s relaxed, self-service café offers delicious cake and coffee and with its private, walled garden is the perfect spot to sit back and soak up views of Kisdon, Buttertubs and the surrounding fells.
The gallery, craftshop and café are uniquely housed in Muker’s 19th Century schoolhouse with a history stretching back to the 1690’s. Muker, surrounded by picturesque villages, wild flower meadows, rugged fells and abundant waterfalls, is arguably the jewel of Upper Swaledale, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
In March 2018 Richard & Polly opened a new exhibition space, The Hartlake Gallery, accessible from the Old School garden*. The Hartlake Gallery will be used to host exhibitions and events, and a full programme can be found on our website.
