A friendly Yorkshire welcome awaits you at Doncaster Racecourse – home to the World-famous St Leger Festival.

Doncaster Racecourse is a Group 1 racecourse and one of the oldest racecourses for horse racing in Britain. The busiest dual-purpose racecourse in the UK, Doncaster typically hosts 37 National Hunt and Flat race meetings throughout the year. Racedays at Town Moor have been attracting appreciative crowds for centuries and Doncaster has long been regarded as one of the finest racecourses in Europe and the best place for horse racing in Yorkshire.

History

Steeped in over 400 years of history, the St Leger Festival features the World’s oldest Classic – the St Leger Stakes, which was founded in 1776 by Colonel Anthony St. Leger.

A Classic is a long-standing Group 1 horse race that is run during the traditional Flat racing season.

A Triple Crown in horse racing is a term used for three Classic races that combine into one achievement. Winning three Classics in a single season means a horse has won the Triple Crown – one of the rarest accomplishments across sport. It requires strength, stamina, luck and determination for a horse to win the three biggest races in its career and the horse usually goes down in history as a legend of the sport.

The English Triple Crown comprises the 2000 Guineas Stakes, taking place in late April/early May at Newmarket; the Derby, ridden over one and a half miles at Epsom in early June; and the final leg is the St Leger Stakes, held over 1 mile six and a half furlongs at Doncaster.

The English Triple Crown has been in existence since 1809 but only a handful of horses have ever won the prestigious prize. The last Triple Crown winner was Nijinsky in 1970, where jockey Lester Piggott rode the three-year-old to victory. Nijinsky was the first horse in 35 years to win the English Triple Crown and the feat hasn’t been repeated since.

A well-known racing saying states that “The fastest horse wins the Guineas, the luckiest the Derby – and the best horse wins the St Leger”.

Another highlight of the St Leger Festival is the Doncaster Cup, which was first run in 1766 – 10 years before the inaugural running of the St. Leger, and is the oldest horse race, still run under British horse racing rules in racing history.
