Vennell’s Restaurant is an intimate 30-cover restaurant in a stunning grade II listed building in Masham, a beautiful gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.

Husband-and-wife team Jon and Laura Vennell have run it since 2005 – Jon in the kitchen and Laura front-of-house.

The food at Vennell’s is as fresh as can be and reflects the changing seasons. It is served simply to bring out its natural flavours, a culinary approach that has been very well received in the eight years it has been wowing customers from far and wide. Jon’s scallops, pork confit, whole sole’s, steaks and chocolate fondant with caramel ice cream have all become signature dishes that loyal customers come back for time and time again.

A clutch of prestigious awards stand as formal testament to Jon and Laura’s skills. They include accolades for Best Sunday Lunch from The Independent; Best Country Restaurant from the Yorkshire Post; Best Neighbourhood Restaurant from Yorkshire Life; several Michelin Bib Gourmand awards; two AA rosettes and five points in the Good Food Guide.

Service is smart and attentive while at the same time relaxed and efficient.

Jon’s pedigree is a fine and international one: he studied for three years at Colchester Institute in the 80’s ahead of a two-year stint in Switzerland. He moved to Yorkshire in 1991 to work as a chef de partie in the newly-opened Haley’s Hotel in Leeds (named by the AA as the North of England’s best newcomer). Aside from a spell as pastry chef at AA Hotel of the Year Crathorne Hall, near Yarm-on-Tees, Jon remained at Haley’s as head chef for ten years, before opening Vennell’s with Laura in 2005.

Laura, a University of Leeds music graduate, met her husband at Haley’s in 1996 while working front of house to earn some extra money. They married in 1999 and have three children.

Vennell’s had a complete makeover in 2012, overseen by Forge Interiors of Bedale. The feel is contemporary and chic but comfortable and welcoming, with grand chandeliers, modern drum shades, luxurious furniture, a copper roll-top bar, sumptuous paints and wallpapers, with stunning shots on the walls by keen photographer Jon.

Jon is very excited about the grand depart of Le Tour de France, which goes through Masham next July. No doubt Vennell’s luxury packed lunches will be in demand!
