There’s a good selection of beers on offer, with something to suit most tastes. The pub also features a pool table and darts, making it a nice spot for a casual game while you enjoy your drink. Well-kept and well-run, it’s a solid choice for a laid-back visit.

We stayed here for the jubilee weekend. It’s a lovely little pub right in the centre of Bedale with fresh looking and clean rooms. The resident dogs are adorable and the staff are welcoming. The reason for four stars is purely on the basis that the bed in our room was particularly uncomfortable (room 1 I think we were in) and I actually ended up sleeping on the floor because it was comfier and less noisy when moving around. It is worth noting though that I believe the land lady is ill and had just had an operation so understandably the chap running it (I think her husband) was doing an absolute grand job. We didn’t actually eat there other than breakfast on the first morning where he put a nice spread of fresh fruit and yoghurt on along with a full fry up. The rooms were clean and tidy, lovely sash windows as you would expect from such an old building. Also, we went with friends and their bed was absolutely fine. So please do not let that put you off staying. Just ask for a room other than 1 if you can and also keep in mind these comments are coming from a couple where one is very light sleeper but needs sleep and the other (myself) is super fidgety and doesn’t sleep much. So the creaky bed wasn’t a good mix for us. However, a chair in the room would have been super as if I can’t sleep and I am fidgety then I tend to get up and read but I couldn’t on this occasion. Overall an extremely pleasant stay. Lots of things to do in the area and they provide you with a folder full of sight seeing and things to do which is in the room. The room also has a little fridge should you wish to buy a small bottle of milk for tea and coffee although some condiments are supplied as you would expect from any b&b or hotel. I hope your wife is on the mend soon. Sending our best wishes to her.
