About The Viaduct Theatre

Description

For almost 30 years, something special has been hiding in the depths of Dean Clough Mills.  Underneath this prestigious development in Central Halifax, there lies a unique, underground 300-seat  auditorium.  For those in the know, The Viaduct Theatre has showcased a variety of events including theatre productions, operas and film screenings and even attracted conferences, weddings and television film crews.  But until Autumn 2019, this unusual, post-industrial performance space remained strictly under the radar.

The Viaduct is now realising its full potential, bringing a whole new line-up of productions to Halifax. The theatre’s forthcoming Programmes will delight local audiences and contribute to the town's vibrant and diverse arts scene, featuring some incredibly exciting touring work that has previously only reached as far as Leeds Playhouse.

"There's a real appetite for performing at The Viaduct." says Executive Director, Sarah Horsley.  "It's a very dramatic, atmospheric space which is much more intimate than more traditional theatres. We've opened the possibility of The Viaduct as a venue for high quality, small to mid-scale work with an emphasis on Drama and New Writing. The response has been phenomenal.”

There has been significant investment in the Front of House space too, with a new entrance to the Theatre, new Stage Door and the opening of the neighbouring True North Restaurant.  Headed by Executive Chef Mark York, the restaurant, a big attraction in itself, is perfect for Theatre-goers, with tempting pre-theatre menus and exclusive themed dinners to accompany productions.

The Viaduct Theatre was established by renowned Resident Theatre Company, Northern Broadsides, whose northern voice adaptations of classic plays, as well as new texts from today’s most talented writers have earned them the acclaim of audiences, critics and industry experts alike. Northern Broadsides continue their long-standing relationship with the theatre, with many wonderful performances planned.

From booking the Panto,, to getting a shoutout for the family, proximity for parking, accessibility to toilets/bar/food it was simple! Then the Panto itself: It was just FABULOUS! The cast BRILLIANT! The kids loved the fact they could join in - the ‘stage’ so near it felt like a family performance. Thank you so very much everyone involved, including Kat who helped sort out a last minute additional booking! We will be definitely back next year!

I took the family to see Sleeping Beauty panto at the Viaduct Theatre yesterday. Most importantly, the kids loved it. It was probably the best panto I've seen. All the actors were great, good songs (good mix of current pop and original songs), great fun and the comedy was spot on. Great to see child dancers too (my kids love seeing other kids on stage). Hard to describe, but it seemed to have more heart than most of the other pantos I've seen. I also preferred the Viaduct as a venue over the Victoria for this type of show - far closer to the action. The actors made good use of the fact the audience were on both sides. I would definitely recommend this and I will be booking in 2022 for Aladdin.
