Helmsley on the Map
If driving from Thirsk to Scarborough, after taking in the impressive Sutton Bank (in a low gear!) you’ll find Helmsley just before half way along the A170.
Helmsley does not have a train station, since passenger services ended in the 1950s. There is a train station at Thirsk and more mainline services slightly further away at York, meaning Helmsley is easiest to visit in a motor vehicle. If you are travelling by car, however, Helmsley makes an excellent base to explore the nearby delights of Yorkshire, as you are roughly equidistant from several fantastic treats: take a day trip to York or Scarborough, explore the North York Moors, or simply spend a relaxing time exploring Helmsley itself.
Have a look round Kirkbymooorside, or travel the short distance to Ampleforth. Also well worth a trip is Byland Abbey; like much of the North York Moors – it is outstanding, steeped in history, and surrounded by glorious views.
