An autumnal retreat to the Feversham Arms
Tucked behind the hustle and bustle of Helmsley’s matchbox town square is a hotel of some repute, The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa.
The “Fev” as it is affectionately known is a stunning, boutique hotel with luxury rooms, a 3 AA rosette restaurant and a famous spa that is widely regarded as one of the finest in Yorkshire.
On arrival to the hotel, you can’t help but be drawn in by the wide, open reception with comfy sofas and an elegant staircase leading to the 33 individually designed bedrooms and suites. From the reception the one thing that first captures your attention though is undoubtedly the Fev’s famous outdoor heated swimming pool, which on the day we arrived is surrounded by a large proportion of the hotel’s patrons basking in the autumnal sun that beats down on the Mediterranean-style courtyard. The chimes from the local church and the ripples and splashes of water from the fountain next to the pool, help to give this part of the hotel a truly relaxing vibe.
The hotel has worked hard on making sure all their rooms deliver a unique, luxury feel and on our visit, we’re staying in one of their deluxe suites. As you walk through the door to our room, you’re immediately welcomed by an elegant separate sitting room, with plush sofas and a view overlooking the outdoor pool. The bed is in the next room and is ridiculously comfortable and the adjoining bathroom is fitted with a walk-in shower, a double ended bath and lots of divine-smelling miniatures to help sooth away any stress you might have.
When it comes to dining, it’s clear that food is something they take very seriously at the hotel, with a sumptuous-looking menu packed full of tasty morsels to devour. Their ethos is entrenched in their location too with lots sourced locally to Helmsley – whether that’s fish from the Yorkshire coast or game from the North York Moors – which means that all the food tastes authentic to this area of delicious produce. On our visit the highlight had to be the 32 day dry aged Dexter beef rib to share which was just melt-in-your mouth brilliant. The hotel also has a fantastic range of wines to suit all budgets and tastes too. You certainly won’t be going to bed hungry here!
Perhaps the highlight of our stay came from our visit to the Verbena Spa the following morning though. The spa itself has a range of facilities which make it one of the best in the region – there’s the outdoor heated swimming pool that has already been mentioned but on top of this there is an aromatherapy room, a steam room, a saunarium, a foot spa, an outdoor hot tub Jacuzzi and a monsoon shower – all there to provide a uniquely revitalising experience for any tired limbs.
If you’re looking for a treatment, the spa has six single treatment rooms and one couples room too. The Spa menu has been designed with luxury in mind and the spa uses Temple Spa and Jessica as their skincare and nail care partners. The spa treatments range from facials to massages, body scrubs to wraps – and they’ve even got a couple of treatments designed specifically for men too. You could always make a full day of it and utilise the spa-tisserie which serves lunch, snacks and drinks throughout the day too.
All in all, if you’re looking for a romantic retreat this autumn, then look no further than the fantastic Fev, as it has everything you need to relax and unwind in style.
