Leeds 2023: The Awakening – Concert in Headingley marks beginning of year-long cultural celebration

in Leeds

“Let culture loose” was the cry that went up from the Headingley Stadium on Saturday night as community groups and Leeds celebrities came together to mark the beginning of Leeds 2023 – a year-long programme of cultural celebration.

From Gabby Logan & Sanchez Payne presenting, to Simon Armitage’s poem written specially for the event and Corinne Bailey Rae talking to a giant made of drone lights, the amazing display had something for everyone.

A particular highlight was the Kaiser Chief’s “I predict a riot” being played on steel drums accompanied by 100 dancers and laser show.

The crowd was made up of cultural contributors who had sent in ballot entries composed of dance, cooking, art, sport and much more. They were treated to music, poetry, fireworks and dance at the Headingley Stadium.

As a kick-off to the city’s cultural celebration, The Awakening was a night to be proud of.
