The Friar’s Head at Akebar reopened to the public on Saturday 25th March 2023, with a full menu available to patrons who booked in advance – and a limited number of casual guests.
The bar & restaurant had for many years been a favourite with visitors and locals, until the previous management left in the autumn of 2022. A new team has taken the business on, launching just in time for the 2023 Tourism season, which kicks off in earnest next week with the Easter Holidays.

Where is Akebar?
You can find Akebar on the A684 road between Leyburn and Bedale, making it very accessible from North or South on the A1, which is just a few short miles away.
Food & Drink – Tried & Tested!
On Thursday evening, representatives from Welcome to Yorkshire were in attendance as the newly installed team prepared a full menu ahead of this weekend’s opening to the public.
The food and drink sampled was of excellent quality, and the interior at the Friar’s Head, already a fantastic venue, has been given a nice facelift.
The menu will suit those looking for a good meal on a visit to Wensleydale, and there are regular deals and special offers which are sure to go down well with those living in the local area too.
There’s a range of excellent local ales on offer in the bar, alongside the golf and lodges at Akebar Park.
Golf Next Door
For golfers, there are 9 and 18 hole courses next door – which are pay-to-play. For families and the less serious, there is a completely free Adventure Golf next to the Friar’s Head which will keep everyone entertained while working up a hunger!
Holiday Cottages on Site
Some bookable holiday cottages are also going to be opening at the Friar’s Head in the near future too.
The new team at the Friar’s Head is Fine and Country Inns Group, who have a selection of similar properties in South Yorkshire – this is their first foray into North Yorkshire.
