Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield

Finding a fun or relaxing activity is quite literally a walk in the park at Pugneys.

The 300-acre Country Park features two lakes, including the designated Local Nature Reserve, overlooked by two bird hides – the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the wide variety of bird visitors returning to the lake each year.

The larger, 100-acre lake is a popular water sports venue, with sailing boats, windsurfers and canoes a regular site on the water. There are facilities for hire, tuition and for the public to launch their own equipment.

During this summer’s holiday period (1st- 25th August), pedalos will be available to hire on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, whilst bikes are available to hire all year round on an hourly basis.

A 1.6-mile path around the edge of this lake is a local favourite for walking or even jogging, whilst a network of footpaths and bridleways connect Pugneys Country Park to Sandal Castle.

The scale miniature railway, operated by a dedicated team of volunteers, is open to the public on most weekends and bank holidays, and during school holidays.

Little ones can be kept entertained with the Blown Away Activity Trail and outdoor play area, whilst adult adventurers and fitness fanatics can take advantage the trim trail outdoor gym- complete with suggested fitness circuits.

The Boat House Café offers fresh food and both hot and cold drinks for visitors, and with barbeque pits and prime picnic space available across the park, visitors can fuel their adventure or down time with whatever they fancy.
