|The Merrion Centre in Leeds is gearing up for an exciting summer as it prepares to host a unique exhibition called Football in Fabric, just in time for the FIFA World Cup. This exhibition, launching in June 2026, promises to be a must-see for football fans and anyone interested in the rich culture surrounding the sport.
Football In Fabric Exhibition
Football in Fabric is not just any ordinary exhibition; it is an immersive experience that delves deep into the world of football culture, identity, and community. Created by Nicol Rorrison, a lifelong football enthusiast and collector, the exhibition features an impressive collection of shirts, memorabilia, photographs, and personal stories. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the emotional journey of football fandom, starting from childhood memories of the 1986 World Cup to the broader social impact that football has had on generations of supporters. Located on the upper balcony level of the Merrion Centre, the exhibition will showcase rare and nostalgic items that tell stories of how sport connects people across cities and generations. This exhibition aims to celebrate both the game itself and the personal experiences that come with being a fan.
World Cup Activities and Competitions

In addition to the exhibition, the Merrion Centre is launching a variety of World Cup-themed activities to engage visitors throughout the tournament. The centre will provide shopping guides to help fans find everything they need for match days, including food, drinks, decorations, and other essentials available from various retailers within the centre. One of the highlights of these activities is the "Take a Shot and Win" social media competition. Football fans can pose in front of a specially designed World Cup-themed photo board installed within the centre. By sharing their photos online, participants will have the chance to win exciting prizes provided by the Merrion Centre's tenants. Prizes include:
Tickets to a gig of the winner’s choice at the first direct arena
Complimentary meals at selected food outlets within the Merrion Centre
Free karaoke sessions at K-Cube
Exclusive prizes and giveaways from various retailers throughout the tournament
This initiative aims to celebrate the communal spirit that the World Cup fosters, encouraging visitors to experience the diverse leisure, retail, and hospitality offerings available at the Merrion Centre.
Community Spirit and Excitement
James Broughton, Head of Marketing & Communications for Town Centre Securities PLC (TCS), which owns the Merrion Centre, expressed the centre's commitment to creating a vibrant atmosphere during the World Cup:
“Football has an incredible ability to bring people together, and this summer we wanted to create something that captures that excitement and sense of community throughout the World Cup.”
The exhibition and associated activities are designed not only to entertain but also to create a sense of belonging and camaraderie among football fans. Nicol Rorrison, the creator of Football in Fabric, also shared his vision for the exhibition:
“This exhibition began as a personal project rooted in football, nostalgia, and memory, but it has grown into something much broader about people, friendship, and shared experience.”
A Hub for Visitors
The Merrion Centre has become one of Leeds' most popular destinations, welcoming nearly 9 million visitors in 2025 alone. Its strategic location in the Arena Quarter, close to major attractions like the first direct arena, ensures high foot traffic, making it an ideal venue for the World Cup celebrations. With its mix of retail, dining, and entertainment options, the Merrion Centre aims to be the go-to spot for anyone looking to enjoy the World Cup atmosphere.
The centre's "World Cup Ready" campaign will help prepare visitors for the tournament, ensuring they have everything they need for an unforgettable experience. As the World Cup approaches, further details about the exhibition's opening dates, launch events, and competition activities will be announced.
