|Ever had one of those arguments with your parents about which music was better, theirs or yours? Imagine that argument, but with glowsticks, bingo books, and massive prizes. That's pretty much what's happening in Leeds this April. Bongo’s Bingo is throwing a massive party, and it’s all about a battle between two of the most iconic decades: the 90s and the 00s. It’s a truly unique theme, pitting shell suits against skinny jeans, and Britpop against garage. The whole thing sounds like a crazy experiment to see what happens when you mash two incredible eras together, and it's coming to the O2 Academy and Project House for a series of wild themed shows.

So, what’s this Bongo’s Bingo thing anyway?
For anyone who hasn't been, it's not like the bingo your nan plays down the local hall. Think of it more like a massive party that just happens to have some bingo thrown in. There are dance-offs on tables, silly prizes you never knew you needed (think giant fluffy unicorns or a cardboard cut-out of a celebrity), and some proper big cash prizes too. The music is loud, the atmosphere is electric, and the entire night is built around a kind of wonderful, organised mess. The press release describes it as being boiled down to its chaotic core, and honestly, that’s the perfect way to put it. It’s an evening of pure, unadulterated fun where nothing is taken too seriously, except maybe winning. These themed shows are designed to take that energy and focus it into a nostalgic explosion, making it an experience that’s about more than just dabbing numbers.
The ultimate showdown: 90s vs 00s
Choosing between the 90s and the 00s is tough. They were both iconic decades that changed everything. The 90s gave us grunge, the Spice Girls, Tamagotchis, and the Fresh Prince. It was a time of dial-up internet that made that screechy noise, and recording the top 40 off the radio onto a cassette tape. The fashion was… a choice. Think baggy jeans, pop-punk hoodies, and curtains. Lots and lots of curtains hairstyles. It was a decade of genuine pop-culture chaos that set the stage for the new millennium.
Then came the 00s, the decade of the future! Or at least, it felt like it. Suddenly, everyone had a mobile phone that could actually fit in their pocket (and play Snake!). The internet got faster, social media was born, and MP3 players meant you could carry thousands of songs with you. Musically, it was a mash-up of everything from Eminem and Beyoncé to The Killers and Arctic Monkeys. The fantastic fashion included low-rise jeans, velour tracksuits, and Ugg boots. It was a time of huge technological advances that completely reshaped the world, making these two decades the perfect rivals for a bingo battle.
A blast from the past in Leeds
These themed shows in April are about celebrating everything that made these times so memorable. It’s a look back at the pop-culture chaos that defined our youth, whether you were a teen in the 90s or the 00s. The nights will be packed with tunes from both eras, so one minute you could be singing your heart out to Oasis, and the next you're doing the dance routine to 'Single Ladies'. The event celebrates not just the music but the whole vibe of the time. This includes the fantastic fashion, the incredible sporting triumphs (think England’s Rugby World Cup win in 2003 or Michael Owen’s goal in ‘98), and the rapid technological advances that went from floppy disks to the first iPod. Even the feeling of political global upheaval from those years adds a certain character to the nostalgia. It’s a unique theme designed to get people from different generations all on the same page, dancing to tunes they all know and love. It’s a crazy experiment in collective memory, played out on a massive scale.

Where and when to find the party
The main event, the big 90s vs 00s showdown, is happening at the O2 Academy in Leeds on Friday 10th April. But that’s not the only chance to get in on the action. Bongo’s Bingo has a whole month of dates planned across two amazing venues in the city. So, if you can’t make the big one, there are other themed shows and classic nights to get stuck into. The events will be taking place at both the O2 Academy and the newer, super-cool Project House, giving everyone a chance to experience the bingo mayhem. This unique theme is just one of many events planned for April.
Here’s a look at some of the dates for your diary:
Friday 3rd April – Project House: Classic Bongo’s Bingo
Friday 10th April – O2 Academy: 90s vs 00s Special
Saturday 18th April – Project House: Classic Bongo’s Bingo
Friday 24th April – O2 Academy: Classic Bongo’s Bingo
Whether it’s the special 90s vs 00s night or one of the other events, the experience promises to be a distillation of Bongo's Bingo's chaotic core. It’s a chance to relive two iconic decades, have a laugh with mates, and maybe even go home with a giant cardboard cut-out of a pop star. What’s not to love?
