|Anyone out and about shopping in Leeds this week might stumble upon something a bit different from the usual high-street scene. Forget window shopping for a moment; between Monday 27th and Wednesday 29th April, shoppers can swap their bags for a tennis racket. The organisers of the Lexus Ilkley Open are setting up a special, free, family-friendly pop-up tennis court right inside Victoria Gate. This isn't just about having a quick knockabout; it's a full-on three-day takeover designed as the perfect build-up to one of Yorkshire's top sporting events. It’s a chance for people of all ages to have a go, test their skills, and maybe even walk away with some brilliant prizes. The whole idea is to bring a taste of the big summer tournament to the city, giving everyone a reason to get involved.

So, what’s happening at Victoria Gate?
Between 10 am and 4 pm from the 27th to the 29th of April, a specially built mini tennis court will appear, ready for action. The main event is a volley challenge. It’s simple: just grab a racket and see how many consecutive volleys can be hit. Sounds easy, right? But the pressure is on, especially when there are tickets on the line. The top performers could win tickets not only to the main Lexus Ilkley Open tennis tournament but also to the fantastic Beyond the Baseline concert series that runs alongside it. It’s a proper challenge with some seriously good rewards. And there's absolutely no need to book – people can just turn up and have a swing. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who fancies a break from the shops to stop by and join in the fun on the court.
It’s not just about the volley challenge, either. The organisers have made sure there’s plenty to do for everyone, even those who don’t want to pick up a racket. Here’s a quick look at what’s on offer:
A giant tennis racket photo prop, perfect for getting a snap for the Instagram grid.
A winner's podium for some classic selfie moments.
Fun hole-in-the-wall challenge games to test accuracy.
All the information needed on tickets, concerts, and hospitality for the main event in Ilkley.
The main event: The Lexus Ilkley Open
This pop-up event is all part of the excitement building for the Lexus Ilkley Open, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Taking place from 5th to 14th June in the lovely town of Ilkley, this tournament has become a massive fixture in the Yorkshire sporting calendar. It’s a big deal in the world of professional tennis, forming part of the WTA 125 and ATP Challenger Tour. What does that mean? Well, it means that some seriously talented players come to Yorkshire. These tours are stepping stones for players on their way to the very top, so spectators get to see future Grand Slam contenders and established world-class tennis stars battling it out on the grass courts. It’s a chance to see high-stakes, professional tennis up close, right on our doorstep.
Tournament Director, Rick Smith, explained the thinking behind the pop-up tennis court. "We wanted to bring a bit of Ilkley to Leeds and give people a fun reason to stop by Victoria Gate. Whether you're a tennis fan or not, come and have a swing, you might just leave with tickets to one of Yorkshire's biggest sporting weeks of the summer." His comments perfectly capture the spirit of the event – it’s about fun, community, and sharing the excitement of the upcoming tournament with a wider audience.

Game, set, and tunes: The Beyond the Baseline concert series
The fun in Ilkley doesn’t stop when the last ball is hit. The Beyond the Baseline concert series is back with an absolutely packed line-up of music acts, making the Lexus Ilkley Open much more than just a tennis event. After a day watching the action on the court, attendees can enjoy some incredible live music. The schedule for June is looking brilliant, with something for almost every taste. From indie legends to DJ sets, the series has it all. It’s the perfect way to round off a summer’s day in Yorkshire. The takeover at Victoria Gate also gives people a chance to win tickets to these amazing gigs.
Here's the packed line-up for the concert series:
5 June — Lightning Seeds, with support from The Farm
6 June — Craig Charles Funk & Soul House Party, with The Beatles Dub Club
9 June — Bay City Rollers
10 June — One Night in Nashville
