Capturing Community Creativity

Mike Harding, a well-known comedian, broadcaster, writer, musician, and avid photographer, has documented the imaginative flowerpot installations that have become a hallmark of the Settle community.

The book features a rich collection of images from Mike as well as contributions from fellow flowerpot enthusiasts Steve Amphlett and Richard Handscombe, who organize the annual Festival. This 64-page glossy book, available for £5, showcases the vibrant and creative displays that bring joy to residents and visitors alike.

Supporting Local Children’s Projects

Proceeds from the sale of the book will support local projects for children, including the swimming pool, drama group, youth groups, school clubs, and other initiatives. Mike Harding emphasizes the importance of investing in the youth of Settle, stating,

“The proceeds will go to local projects for children – such as the swimming pool, drama group, youth groups, school clubs or one-off projects. We like to support the young people in the area as they will be the future of the Settle community.”

Community and Charity Collaboration

The creation of the book was made possible through the support of the Clapham-based charity Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT), which funded the project. The book’s design and layout were generously provided free of charge by Mike’s friend, designer, and photographer Bryan Ledgard, while the printing was handled by local business iPrint.

Where to Buy the Book

Copies of the book can be ordered online at Visit Settle or purchased from various Settle retailers, including Wholesome Bee, Cottontail Crafts, House That Jack Built, Truly Scrumptious, Watershed Mill, and the Tourist Information Centre. Additional independent retailers are welcome to stock the book to further support this community initiative.

Join the Celebration

The book signing event on 29th June is not just an opportunity to meet Mike Harding but also to celebrate the Settle community’s creativity and support a worthy cause. The Flowerpot Festival itself runs from 13th July to 1st September, offering free family fun as visitors explore the town’s whimsical flowerpot creations.
