The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (K&WVR), a cherished heritage steam railway and one of Yorkshire’s top tourist attractions, is set to complete its largest volunteer-led project to date.

This significant undertaking involves the replacement of the historic Bridge 27, a vital structure that has supported the railway for over 135 years.

Bridge 27: A critical infrastructure renewal

Starting from Monday, 2nd September, the railway’s one-mile stretch between Haworth and Oxenhope will be closed for three weeks. The closure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of Bridge 27, which spans Bridgehouse Beck, one of the main tributaries of the River Worth. While this section is closed, the remaining stretch from Keighley to Haworth will continue to operate weekend services.

This project has been on the radar of K&WVR’s engineering team for over a decade, with detailed planning beginning around 2015. The bridge, originally constructed in 1889 during a reconstruction effort, comprises two separate structures that share the same foundations. One part of the bridge, leading into Haworth Yard, was refurbished in the late 1970s and remains functional. However, the mainline section, which carries the railway over the beck, has shown significant deterioration, necessitating this comprehensive renewal.

A decade of planning and effort

James Barlow, Chief Civil Engineer at K&WVR, highlighted the meticulous planning and execution involved in this project. “We had the replacement of Bridge 27 on our radar for more than 10 years and have planned its renewal since around 2015,” Barlow explained. “Our regular inspections picked up the deterioration that has to be expected in a structure of its age. Its replacement is the culmination of nearly 10 years of effort by our volunteer engineering team, supported by specialist designers and contractors.”

The replacement process began in May 2024 when the track was removed, allowing contractors Keller to install 12 reinforced concrete piles behind the existing structure. These preparations set the stage for the dismantling of the old bridge and the installation of a new 50-ton steel deck, fabricated by Beaver Bridges and currently being painted in Scunthorpe.

Community support and environmental impact

This project, which is expected to cost £1.25 million, has been significantly funded by a £1 million grant from the Government’s Community Ownership Fund, part of the broader ‘Levelling Up’ initiative. The new bridge design features a longer span than its predecessor, eliminating the need for a central pier. This improvement not only reduces future maintenance needs but also lowers the flood risk in the surrounding area.

The project has received strong support from the local community and businesses. Notably, Wyedean Weaving, a local business, has provided crucial access to the construction site through their car park, which has served as the project’s base for six weeks.

Looking ahead: Full line reopening

The completion of this project will be a significant milestone for K&WVR, allowing the railway to continue its operations with improved infrastructure. The railway is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, 21st September, with steam services running the full length of the line from Keighley to Oxenhope.

For those interested in witnessing the result of this monumental effort, the K&WVR offers a unique experience, travelling through the stunning Brontë countryside on a five-mile branch line rich with history and charm. The line features iconic stations like Haworth and Oakworth, made famous by the 1970 film “The Railway Children” and its recent sequel.

This project underscores the dedication of K&WVR’s volunteers, who have tirelessly worked to preserve and enhance this beloved railway for future generations.
