Looking for somewhere to stargaze? The Dark Skies Fringe Festival at Dalby Forest is about to get even better with new stargazing friendly lights. 25th October to 3rd November is the perfect time to get out and experience the night sky with minimal light pollution.

What’s on at Dalby Forest?

Dalby Forest is already a great spot to stargaze but we’ve taken it to the next level. Over 60 new lights have been installed, designed to reduce light pollution. They’re placed around the Visitor Centre in Pickering and Low Dalby village so the forest is dark enough to see the stars but safe for everyone visiting.

This year you can get up close and personal with the night sky at stargazing sessions with Astro Dog. Ever wanted to learn how to spot constellations or planets? These sessions are for you. You can even see the stars while canoeing, walking or listening to the sounds of the night on a special sound walk with artist Cecilia Tyrrell at Sutton Bank.

Why is light pollution a problem?

Light pollution might not seem like a big deal but it can really ruin our chances of seeing the stars. It also affects wildlife. By swapping out old lights for dark skies friendly fittings Dalby Forest is helping the natural world and giving us all a better view of the sky.

In fact Dalby Forest isn’t the only one – places like Sutton Bank and the village of Hawnby are also making the switch and joining the dark skies movement.
