Wakefield District is gearing up for an exciting and groundbreaking event this September, the first-ever Inclusive Sports Festival. This festival, which is a part of the “Our Year – Wakefield District 2024” celebration, is designed to encourage and promote physical activity among people with disabilities, ensuring that everyone in the community has the opportunity to participate in sports.

What to expect at the inclusive sports festival
The Inclusive Sports Festival, hosted by Wakefield Council in partnership with Yorkshire Sport, will feature a range of live sports demonstrations and taster sessions. These activities are spread across multiple venues throughout the district, offering participants a chance to explore different sports in a welcoming and supportive environment.
The festival will culminate in two major fun days:
- Saturday, 7 September, from 11am to 2pm at Thornes Park Stadium
- Sunday, 15 September, from 10am to 1pm at Featherstone Sports Complex
These fun days will offer a variety of sports taster sessions, with experts on hand to guide participants and answer any questions they may have. The aim is to not only introduce new sports to people with disabilities but also to encourage regular participation in local sports clubs.
A year-long celebration of inclusion
The Inclusive Sports Festival is part of a larger initiative, “Our Year – Wakefield District 2024,” which is a year-long celebration dedicated to inclusivity, culture, and community. The event is an invitation to all residents to enjoy 366 days of creativity and connection, highlighting Wakefield’s commitment to making the district a welcoming place for everyone.
Community leaders championing the event
Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, and Sport, expressed her enthusiasm for the festival, stating,
“We are looking forward to seeing people come together for our first Inclusive Sporting Festival. It is so important that everyone has the opportunity to take part in activities to get their bodies moving.”
Cllr Appleyard emphasized the festival’s role in breaking down barriers and creating an inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can enjoy physical activity.
A special guest appearance by Chris Kamara MBE
Adding to the excitement, Wakefield’s own sporting hero, Chris Kamara MBE, will be making an appearance at the fun day in Featherstone on Sunday, 15 September. Known for his achievements in football and his work as a television presenter, Kamara will be there to support the event and encourage participants.
