Artist talk with Jason Wilsher-Mills

A Sneak peek into the exhibition: Jason beside the sea

Jason’s work explores nostalgia, disability and playful imagination, turning these into big, inflatable sculptures. His exhibition at Woodend Gallery until 4th January 2025 is all about seaside memories and joyful moments by the shore, brought to life in a colourful, bold and often life size way. One of the highlights? A giant inflatable crab!

During the talk Jason will take you through the inspirations and stories behind the work. The seaside plays a big part in this show, it’s where many of us have fun and magic. From sandcastles to family holidays, Jason taps into these shared experiences and turns them into something entirely new and unexpected.

The artist’s view

What makes this even more special is the chance to hear from Jason about how his disability affects his process. As an artist with a disability Jason brings a new perspective to the art world, challenging the traditional ideas of accessibility and inclusion in creative spaces. He’ll share his experiences, the challenges he’s faced and how his work celebrates and gives voice to underrepresented communities.

This talk isn’t just about the art but the broader narratives Jason weaves into his work—stories of resilience, humour and belonging. You’ll get to see how he turns these ideas into these big, physical forms and how he’s pushing boundaries as a disabled artist.
