York RLFC fans, we have got some good news! Kieran Buchanan, a utility player who has impressed in the Rugby League Championship, has joined York RLFC. The 25 year old will join the squad for the 2025 season on a 2 year deal. He comes from Championship rivals Batley Bulldogs where he played for 4 seasons.

Who is Kieran Buchanan?
Buchanan’s path to York has been quite the journey. From Hull he started his professional career with Hull FC in the Super League making 13 appearances before moving to Batley Bulldogs in 2021. His ability quickly made him a standout in the league and by the time he left Batley he had played over 100 games. Centre, wing, full back or second row he’s played them all and his versatility has been a big asset and he’s even shown strength in the second row.
But it’s not just his club record that’s impressed. In 2021 he earned international honours playing for Scotland in the Rugby League World Cup. Fans will remember him playing against Italy, Australia and Fiji in the tournament and he proved he can play on the big stage.
Experience for the squad
Head Coach Mark Applegarth is delighted to welcome Buchanan to the squad especially as he comes with Championship experience.
“I’m looking forward to working with Kieran,” Applegarth said, “he will be a big help to the younger players. He’s been around the Championship for years and knows the game at a different level.”
With Buchanan joining the squad Applegarth believes we are getting a good player and a mentor for our young talent.
And he’s not the only new face. He’s the second signing for the 2025 season along with experienced hooker Paul McShane who will also be joining the club.
