Make it Wild, an organisation dedicated to wildlife habitat creation since 2010, is witnessing extraordinary results from its efforts at Bank Woods in Summerbridge, Harrogate. Recent surveys reveal a significant increase in moth biodiversity, showcasing the positive impact of rewilding initiatives.

In 2018, the Nidderdale WildWatch team identified 34 moth species before the planting of 5,000 native, broadleaved trees. Subsequent surveys in 2023 by Jill Warwick and Charles Fletcher from the Harrogate District Naturalists’ Society recorded 180 macro-moth species and 42 micro-moth species, respectively. The latest survey on 17th July 2024 documented 122 different species, bringing the total to 265, many of which are rare in Yorkshire.

Make It Wild

Charles Fletcher highlighted the importance of old upland woodland habitats like Bank Woods, noting their role in supporting a diverse range of moth species. The new plantings are also attracting a wide variety of insect life, indicating a promising future for biodiversity in the area.

Christopher Neave, co-founder of Make it Wild, expressed his enthusiasm for the increasing moth species list, emphasizing the importance of creating reserves where wildlife can thrive without interference.

The ecological role of moths

Moths are vital to ecosystems as prolific pollinators and a crucial food source for birds, bats, and other predators. Their larvae also play an essential role in decomposing organic matter, enriching the soil with nutrients. Supporting moth populations helps sustain these critical ecological processes, contributing to healthy and diverse habitats.

Community engagement and conservation success

The success at Bank Woods is a testament to the power of community involvement in conservation. Make it Wild’s initiatives are supported by volunteers and business partnerships with companies like Biffa, De Vere Hotels, and Footasylum. The organisation manages ten nature reserves in Yorkshire and is expanding its network across the UK through nature sponsorship, carbon offsetting, and team-building activities.
