Celebrating success in local tourism

Wold Top Brewery, based in Wold Newton, and its sister company, Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, have been shortlisted for several categories in this year’s REYTAs. These prestigious awards, now in their 14th year, highlight the best businesses and individuals contributing to tourism in Hull and East Yorkshire. Both businesses are competing for titles that emphasise sustainability and excellence in local production.

Wold Top Brewery is a finalist in two key categories: Remarkable Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism and Remarkable Local Producer. These nominations underline the brewery’s dedication to responsible production methods and support of local agriculture.

Meanwhile, Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery has secured a spot in three categories: Remarkable Cuppa, Remarkable Local Producer, and Remarkable Taste. Their inclusion across multiple areas demonstrates the distillery’s wide-ranging impact, from whisky production to running the popular Pot Still Coffee Shop, which is well-loved by locals and tourists alike.

Recognition for local excellence

Jenni Ashwood, marketing director at Spirit of Yorkshire, expressed her excitement about the nominations.

“Tourism is an important part of the distillery’s offering,” she said, adding that the entire team is thrilled that the Pot Still Coffee Shop has been recognised by regional tourism leaders. “We look forward to meeting our fellow finalists at the awards dinner,”

she added.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure, and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, praised the diversity and excellence of the nominees.

“The awards are a testament to the popularity of the region as a visitor destination and the range of what’s on offer to see and do within Hull and East Yorkshire,”

he said. He also highlighted the significance of the visitor economy for regional growth and wished all finalists success.

Awards night anticipation

The results of the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards will be announced at a ceremony hosted at Bridlington Spa on 14th November 2024. The event promises to bring together the region’s top tourism businesses in celebration of their outstanding achievements over the past year.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery: From field to bottle

Based in Hunmanby, Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery is renowned for producing Filey Bay single malt whisky. What makes the distillery unique is its field-to-bottle approach, with 100% of the barley used in its whisky grown locally. This commitment to using home-grown ingredients not only supports local agriculture but also ensures the quality and traceability of their products. Spirit of Yorkshire is one of only a few distilleries worldwide that maintains complete control over the entire production process from grain to glass.

Wold Top Brewery’s sustainable approach

Located at Hunmanby Grange near Filey, Wold Top Brewery was established in 2003 on the Mellor family farm. The brewery’s use of home-grown barley and water sourced from the farm’s own borehole highlights their dedication to sustainable, environmentally responsible brewing practices. Their range of beers, including cask, keg, and bottled varieties, are enjoyed throughout Yorkshire and across the UK.

These two businesses not only share a focus on quality but also on their role as key players in the local economy. By supporting each other and working together, Wold Top Brewery and Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery continue to represent the best of what the Yorkshire coast has to offer.

With five awards on the line, both teams are hopeful for a successful outcome at the November awards ceremony, which will further cement their reputation as leaders in the local tourism industry.

The future looks bright for these Yorkshire-based businesses as they continue to thrive in the region’s growing tourism sector.
