A Day Filled with Whisky Delights

The Open Day is designed to engage both whisky novices and connoisseurs with a variety of activities. Visitors can look forward to distillery tours, whisky tastings, and exclusive masterclasses. David Thompson, director and co-founder of Spirit of Yorkshire, highlights the event’s highlights:

“Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the distillery, taste our whisky, participate in masterclasses, and observe the innovative farm machinery we use to grow our barley.”

One of the main attractions will be the chance to sample and purchase the Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2024 Special Release single malt whisky, a limited edition available first at this event.

Specialised Masterclasses

Two premier masterclasses headline the event: ‘Fresh from the Cask’ and ‘Directors’ Choice’. In ‘Fresh from the Cask’, participants will taste six whiskies drawn straight from the cask, providing an authentic and raw tasting experience. ‘Directors’ Choice’ offers a curated tasting of the favorite whiskies of David Thompson and his co-founder Joe, with insights into their creation and what sets them apart.

Additionally, two free masterclasses will be hosted on the main stage. ‘Legacy and Conservation’ will delve into the distillery’s conservation efforts and guiding ethos, while ‘Made of Yorkshire’ will showcase a local artisan producer, emphasizing the distillery’s commitment to regional craftsmanship.

Local Flavors and Family Fun

Complementing the whisky experience, the Wold Top Brewery mobile bar will serve a variety of beers. Other local producers will also be present, sharing their products and stories, offering samples, and selling items for visitors to enjoy at home.

The Pot Still Coffee Shop will provide hot drinks and homemade cakes, ensuring there’s something for everyone, even those who might not be whisky aficionados.

Ticket Information

Adult tickets for the Open Day are priced at £15 when pre-booked or £20 on the day. These tickets include a distillery tour, a tasting session, and a Spirit of Yorkshire nosing glass. Child tickets (ages 6 to 17) cost £5 and include a distillery tour (excluding tasting).

Children under 6 can enter for free but cannot participate in the tours. Masterclass tickets are priced at £45 per session. Pre-booking online at Spirit of Yorkshire’s website is recommended to secure spots for both the Open Day and the masterclasses, although tickets may be available on the day, subject to availability.

Unique Production Process

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery stands out as one of the few distilleries globally that grows 100% of the barley used in its whisky production. This farm-to-bottle approach is a collaboration between Tom Mellor, a farmer and brewer from Wold Top Brewery, and David Thompson.

Launched in 2016, the distillery boasts some of the most impressive distilling equipment in the country, including two of the largest Forsyth pot stills in the UK outside of Scotland.

Accessibility and Additional Information

While the distillery aims to be as accessible as possible, certain areas are not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Visitors are advised to avoid high heels due to the mezzanine flooring. For more details on accessibility, visitors can refer to the distillery’s accessibility guide on their website.
