On Thursday, 1st August 2024, Central Tramway in Scarborough will host a momentous celebration, marking both Yorkshire Day and the company’s 143rd birthday. Highlighting the event is the unveiling of the esteemed Red Wheel Plaque, awarded by the National Transport Trust, acknowledging Central Tramway’s historical significance in British transportation.

Colin Powell, General Manager of Central Tramway, expressed his pride in the achievement:

“We are the first venue in central Scarborough to receive the prestigious accolade, and on 1st August 2024 we will be unveiling the Red Wheel Plaque at our upper station. We would like to welcome all locals and visitors to come and join the celebration.”

The history of Central Tramway is rich and storied. Founded with the guidance of its first chairman, John Woodall Woodall, a local banker and four-time mayor of Scarborough, the tramway began construction in February 1881. Funded by £10,000 raised through company shares, the tramway was ready for public use by 1st August of the same year, welcoming almost 3,000 passengers on its inaugural day.

Originally powered by steam, the tramway’s engine house was strategically placed midway down the track. This historical engineering marvel is now celebrated and remembered as an integral part of Scarborough’s heritage.

Event Highlights and Schedule

The day’s celebrations will kick off at 10am with Town Crier David Birdsall delivering a traditional Yorkshire Day Cry at the Upper Station. This will be followed by the plaque unveiling ceremony, presided over by Councillor Janet Jefferson, the Charter Mayor of Scarborough for 2024/2025.

Visitors can enjoy live music from the Hunmanby Brass Band, adding to the festive atmosphere. At the lower station, a pop-up tramway exhibition hosted by ‘The Box’ on the windmill site will offer an intriguing glimpse into the tramway’s history since its opening in 1881. The exhibition will feature a variety of historical artifacts and displays, providing a comprehensive narrative of Central Tramway’s journey through the years.

In addition to celebrating the tramway’s past, the event also aims to support the local community. Funds will be raised for the RNLI Scarborough, a cause close to many hearts in the coastal town.
