MKM Building Supplies, the UK’s largest independent builder’s merchant, is set to open its 130th branch in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Monday, 2nd September. This latest expansion will not only create 18 new jobs in the area but also further the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting local communities and charities.

New leadership with local ties

The Rotherham branch will be managed by Ryan Brooks and Jack Griffiths, both of whom are long-time residents of South Yorkshire and bring a wealth of experience from the builder’s merchant industry. Their combined 35 years of expertise with some of the UK’s leading merchants will undoubtedly contribute to the success of this new venture.

Ryan Brooks expressed his excitement about leading the new branch in his hometown, saying,

“The opportunity to lead MKM Rotherham and create jobs in my hometown feels incredible. I’m proud to be from Yorkshire, and as a community, Rotherham is still small enough to know and care about the people that live here.”

He also highlighted the importance of local charity work, noting that MKM’s commitment to community support is more than just a corporate initiative—it’s a genuine effort to make a difference at the local level.

Jack Griffiths echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of creating a branch that truly serves the people of Rotherham.

“For me, this branch is about more than just business; it’s about creating something from the ground up that genuinely serves the people of Rotherham. Our team is made up of local people who understand the needs of local customers, and we’re committed to delivering a personal, community-focused service,”

Griffiths said.

Extensive range of products and services

The new MKM Rotherham branch will offer a comprehensive selection of building materials, featuring top brands such as Kingspan, Velux, Marshalls, Siniat Plasterboards, Global Stone, and Carlton Brick. The branch will also support local suppliers, including Rotherham Sand & Gravel and Principal Building Products. Located on an 86,000 square feet site, the branch includes a large, covered area to ensure that key materials like timber, bricks, and aggregates are stored under cover, providing convenience for customers who need to load their materials without getting wet.

In addition to the vast product range, MKM Rotherham will offer specialised services, including a sheet cutting service and plumbing and heating expertise. With over 130 years of collective merchanting experience among the staff, the branch is well-equipped to provide expert advice and support to both trade professionals and DIY enthusiasts.

Jack Griffiths noted that the branch is designed to cater to the needs of local tradespeople, offering a beautiful showroom, well-stocked shelves, and a knowledgeable team ready to assist customers. The branch will also provide free delivery, tailored pricing, and flexible credit options to make project management easier for trade customers.

A hub for the community

MKM Rotherham is not just about selling building materials; it aims to be a hub for the local community. The branch will feature a dedicated customer area where visitors can enjoy free tea and coffee, grab a bite to eat, and take a break from their work. Ryan Brooks explained,

“We want our branch to be more than just a place to buy materials. It’s a place where our customers can pop in for a chat, recharge, and get some knowledgeable advice on build challenges they’re facing.”

Beyond its commercial offerings, MKM Rotherham is committed to giving back to the community. The branch has already begun building relationships with local charities, including Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, and is looking to get involved in grassroots sports and other local initiatives. This focus on community engagement is a core part of the branch’s mission.

Looking ahead

As MKM continues its expansion, the opening of the Rotherham branch marks another step in the company’s journey of growth and community involvement. The team at MKM Rotherham is eager to make a positive impact on the local community, providing not only high-quality building materials and services but also supporting local charities and initiatives that matter to the people of Rotherham.
