Bradford City AFC has made a strong addition to its defensive line-up with the signing of experienced centre-back Matt Pennington. The 30-year-old joins the Bantams on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract with Blackpool.
A Proven League One Performer

Pennington arrives at Valley Parade with a wealth of experience in the third tier of English football. He made 67 appearances for Blackpool across two seasons, including 56 in Sky Bet League One. In total, he has featured in more than 200 League One matches and has also played 68 times in the Championship.
A product of the Everton academy, Pennington spent 16 years at Goodison Park and made his Premier League debut for the club in 2015. His career has since included impressive loan spells with Ipswich Town and Leeds United, where he built a reputation as a composed, reliable defender at Championship level.
A Signing with Intent
Speaking after completing the move to BD8, Pennington said:
“I am really excited to be here. This is the right decision for me and my family. It feels really good to be at the club and I cannot wait to get going straight away. I met the manager earlier in the summer and he aligned with what I want to see in a football team and the values he has and instils in his side. Ever since that conversation, I wanted to get the deal done.”
Manager Graham Alexander was equally positive about the new addition:
“We feel Matt will fit in with our way of playing really well, with his attributes and experience, whilst also having a great attitude and team ethic. The competition we now have in the back three is very strong, which will only help us be better. We are thrilled to bring him here.”
Ready for the Challenge
Pennington’s move is subject to EFL clearance but marks a significant signing as the Bantams prepare for their return to Sky Bet League One. With a solid core of defenders and an ambitious outlook for the season ahead, fans can look forward to seeing Pennington in action as City aim to make a serious impact.
