Yorkshire.com celebrates an historic season for Yorkshire football
This season has been one to remember for Yorkshire football as three proud clubs—Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers, and Bradford City—have each earned promotion in their respective leagues, showcasing the grit, passion, and community spirit that defines the region.
Leeds United have secured a return to the Premier League, reigniting the pride of Elland Road and fans across the county, and around the world. They secured this by scoring a last-gasp winner moments from full time away at Plymouth Argyle to win the league by Goal Difference after six wins out of six saw off strong competition from Burnley, who took the second automatic promotion place.
Sheffield Wednesday finished their Championship season 12th, after looking in with a shout of playoffs in mid season, but falling away a little. Middlesbrough experienced a similar story, but were agonizingly closer, finishing four points from the playoffs, in 10th, after losing four of their last six, winning only once.
At the other end of the table, Hull City narrowly saved their Championship status on the last game of the season, avoiding relegation.
Doncaster Rovers’ impressive campaign has seen them bounce back in style as winners of League Two. Meanwhile, Bradford City’s long-awaited climb marks a new chapter in their storied history; the Bantams grabbed the third and final automatic promotion spot in the division, 6 minutes into injury time at Valley Parade on Saturday amid incredible scenes.
Bradford and Doncaster move up into League One in 2025/26 where they will be joining Huddersfield, Barnsley and Rotherham, who finish the season in mid table, despite having looked like playoffs were a possibility at times during the season.
Harrogate Town stay in League Two, after finishing 18th – good consolidation of their place in the Football League – where they might be joined by York City (2nd) or Halifax Town (6th) who will have to do battle in the playoffs to get out of the National League.
Pleasingly, three promotions and three playoffs spots have been secured by yorkshire’s professional clubs – and none of those in the top five leagues were relegated this term; marking an excellent 2024/25 season for the region.
Yorkshire Ambassador and England cricket captain Harry Brook also joined in the celebration:
“As someone born and bred in Yorkshire, I know how much this means to people across the county. Sport brings us together in special ways, and seeing Leeds, Doncaster, and Bradford City all going up is fantastic for the region. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and fans—you’ve done us proud.”
On behalf of Yorkshire.com, Managing Director Linda Scott offered her heartfelt congratulations:
“This is a moment of pride not just for the clubs and their loyal supporters, but for all of Yorkshire. Football has always been part of our region’s soul, and to see three of our teams achieve promotion in the same season is extraordinary. It speaks to the strength of our communities and the deep passion that runs through every town and city here.”
This triple promotion marks a new era for Yorkshire football and sets the stage for thrilling matchdays ahead. From Premier League nights in Leeds to electric atmospheres in Doncaster and Bradford, the future is bright—and undeniably Yorkshire.
Good luck for the Playoffs in Sheffield, York and Halifax!
