This August, Opera on Location Sheffield invites you to an extraordinary rendition of Verdi’s A Masked Ball, set against the vibrant backdrop of Sheffield’s SADACCA (Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association). For three thrilling nights, the historic GMill will be transformed into a bustling street fair, offering an immersive experience that blends operatic grandeur with the lively atmosphere of a community festival.

A Fresh Take on a Classic
The reimagined A Masked Ball is the brainchild of Ashley Pearson, a cherished member of the Opera on Location team. Pearson’s modern adaptation promises to captivate audiences with its blend of powerful music and dynamic storytelling.
Verdi’s tale of political intrigue, personal betrayal, and forbidden love will be brought to life by a talented cast, accompanied by a 17-piece orchestra under the expert baton of musical director Gamal Khamis.
The Story Unfolds
At the heart of the opera is Riccardo, a beloved politician on the brink of an election. However, his seemingly bright future is overshadowed by a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation and his own complicated emotions towards Amelia, his close friend’s wife. This gripping narrative of love, deceit, and downfall will unfold in a setting that enhances the dramatic tension and emotional depth of Verdi’s work.
A Decade of Innovation and Excellence
Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023 with a sold-out concert at Upper Chapel, Opera on Location continues its mission to bring opera to unique and unconventional spaces. This latest production at SADACCA showcases the company’s commitment to engaging with diverse communities and creating memorable cultural experiences.
SADACCA itself is more than just a venue; it’s a cornerstone of the local community, known for its inclusivity and collaboration. The partnership with Opera on Location highlights the shared values of both organisations in promoting cultural enrichment and accessibility.
Behind the Scenes
The creative team behind this ambitious project is a powerhouse of talent and experience. Co-Artistic Director Gareth Lloyd and Producer Justin Palmer lead the production, with Pearson directing. The ensemble cast is supported by a local community chorus, adding an authentic and personal touch to the performance. The team also includes assistant director Rochelle Wilson, assistant musical director Michelle Santiago, and chorus master Elliott Walker, all contributing to the seamless execution of the opera.
