Ever wanted to mark a moment in history but didn’t fancy a formal museum tour? On Thursday 8th May 2025, Holmfirth’s putting on a community event that’s heartfelt, local, and easy to join. If you’ve ever stood still just to listen to a brass band play or stared at a bonfire because it makes you feel something—this might be your thing.
It’s for anyone who cares about remembering the end of World War II in Europe, not with speeches and statues, but with music, light, and shared silence.

A small town doing something big
So, here’s what’s happening. On the evening of Thursday 8th May 2025, people from around the Holme Valley will gather at Cliff Recreation Ground (just off Cliff Road in Holmfirth). It all kicks off at 8:45pm—late enough for the sky to start dimming, which sets the mood for what’s to come.
You’ll hear the Hade Edge Band play (they’re local legends with brass instruments that cut right through the chill evening air), and there’ll be a special reading of The Tribute—a short but meaningful message shared across the country to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Then comes the big moment: the lighting of the beacon. It’s one of those goosebumps kind of things. The fire, the crowd, the quiet. No one claps. No one has to.
Don’t worry, it’s for everyone
This isn’t a formal affair. No dress code, no tickets, no VIP areas. Just bring a torch, wear decent shoes (you’ll be on grass), and maybe wrap up warm.
Also, if you’re hungry or fancy a brew, the 1st Holme Valley Scouts will be sorting refreshments. They always do a cracking job, and it’s another way to support local young people.
A heads up though: if you’re coming by car, don’t park on Cliff Road. It gets tight. Walk if you can—it’s part of the experience. A bit of fresh air, a bit of community.
Who’s making it happen?
This whole thing’s been pulled together thanks to the Holme Valley Parish Council and the Holme Valley Lions. These are the kind of folks who do loads behind the scenes to keep things ticking in the community, and it’s nice to see events like this funded and supported without it turning into a massive commercial thing.
If you want to know more or fancy helping out, you can reach the organisers at [email protected]. They’d probably be glad to hear from you.

Why it matters
VE Day was the day World War II ended in Europe—80 years ago. That’s not ancient history. For some, it’s what their grandparents lived through. For others, it’s still shaping how they see peace, war, and what matters.
This little event in Holmfirth won’t change the world. But it’ll mark something important. With music. With fire. With people.
And honestly? That’s more than enough.
