The quintessential Herriot countryside, known the world over, thanks to Thirsk-based veterinary surgeon Alfred James Wight OBE writing under the pseudonym of James Herriot whose stories about life as a rural vet sold over 60 million copies of six books, numerous other books, two feature films, and the BBC ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ TV series that was compulsive Sunday night viewing from 1978 to 1990 and now a remake on Channel 5 TV is capturing a new generation of fans along with ‘The Yorkshire Vet’ reality TV series based on James Herriot’s original veterinary practice, Skeldale Veterinary Surgery in Thirsk.
Herriot Country is blessed by some of the finest North Yorkshire attractions, hotels and bed and breakfasts, country pubs and restaurants and has everything for that perfect, relaxing break just over two hours by train from London. It is all about the community, the characters, filming locations and of course the beautiful North Yorkshire Countryside. Once you have been, we are sure we will be welcoming you back again soon to Herriot Country.
