Plan your Grand Days Out in Barnsley

Day 1

Spend your first day exploring Barnsley’s thriving town centre.

Begin at The Glass Works, the centrepiece of Barnsley town square which boasts a variety of well-known brands as well as delicious dining options. Move through the shopping centre to Barnsley Markets which house over 100 stalls run by traders from across the north. Here you can pick up unique gems including vintage clothing and valuable antiques, or just sample some local fare.

In the afternoon, visit the museums in Barnsley town for a range of exciting family-friendly activities. Start at Experience Barnsley, a museum which reveals the heritage of Barnsley through interactive exhibits designed with children in mind. Older children might also enjoy exploring the art collections at Cooper Gallery. Alternatively, families could go swimming and bowling at The Metrodome.

End your day with a trip to The Lamproom or The Civic, the two local theatres in Barnsley which offer a variety of excellent theatre productions and live music shows. You could also go bowling at The Glass Works’ Superbowl UK or catch one of the latest films at neighbouring Cineworld!

Day 2

Enjoy a day in the great outdoors!

Travel to Elsecar to visit the Elsecar Heritage Centre. Once a thriving production hub for iron and coal, the old workshops now house a variety of shops including craft stalls, artist studios and a section dedicated to antiques. You can also see a heritage railway and historic exhibitions outlining the past of this model village.

Journey away from Elsecar to Worsbrough to visit another historic attraction – Worsbrough Mill, a 17th-century working water mill that is still used to grind flour. Enjoy lunch at the Millers Tea Room which offers a selection of light dishes, coffee, and cakes. Afterwards, take a tour of the mill and learn about the milling process. Follow this with a walk through the 240 acres of tranquil country park that surrounds the mill.

If you are heading back to the town centre for the evening, check if there is an event to watch!

Day 3

Spend another day taking in some fresh air at one of the many outdoor attractions in Barnsley.

Barnsley sits at the centre of the Trans Pennine Trail which offers fantastic opportunities for walking or cycling excursions. The trail passes through many picturesque historical places including Worsbrough Mill and Wentworth Castle Gardens where you can enjoy a gentle stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens, followed by refreshments in the tearoom.

Immerse yourself in nature with a trip to the idyllic RSBP Old Moor Nature Reserve. Settle down in the hides and behind strategically placed viewing screens and survey protected wetland habitats which are a hotbed breeding ground for the rare Bittern and the Marsh Harrier. You can also spot dragonflies zipping just above the water, and there are Wild Play Zones and pond dipping for children. A highlight is the specially designed wellbeing trail with seasonal mindfulness exercises to do at various tranquil locations.

For a more traditional wellness experience, there are several spas in Barnsley for you to choose between. Most well-known is multi-award-winning House of Beauty which offers luxury beauty treatments and massages for men and women. Tranquil Garden is a more laidback spa which aims to rebalance the mind and body through a range of holistic treatments and time spend outdoors in the hydro massage hot tub, wood-fired Finnish sauna cabin and sunroom.

Day 4

Today is devoted to one of the most popular attractions in Barnsley borough – 300-year-old Cannon Hall Country House which sits in 70 acres of beautiful 18C parkland. Admire the elegant Georgian architecture and Victorian era décor inside the house and browse artefacts in the Cannon Hall Museum. End your visit with a walk around the grounds and a trip to the petting zoo at Cannon Hall Farm, a real favourite with children.

Keen golfers can retreat to one of the two courses at Barnsley for some peace and quiet and the chance to reduce their handicap. Hillies Pavilion near Wombell is a 32-hole course whilst Limes is an extensive 69, and both offer a warm and friendly welcome. Nearby Silkstone also has a course that golf enthusiasts can enjoy.
