Stars of the screen

A haven for TV drama, the area is best known for ITV's Where the Heart Is series filmed mainly in Marsden and Slaithwaite, and the BBC's iconic Last of the Summer Wine comedy. More recently, Marsden played host to the BBC 3 zombie drama In the Flesh, ITV’s Jericho, and the blockbuster A Monster Calls. Fans of Last Tango in Halifax can stock up at the supermarket where Gillian works – the Co-op in the centre of Marsden.

Inspiring landscapes

The brooding natural landscape has inspired artists for centuries. Follow the Stanza Stones trail to The Snow Stone, Pule Hill – inscribed with poetry by local playwright and poet Simon Armitage CBE. Spot 15 sculptures between Milnsbridge and Marsden on the River Colne Sculpture Trail.

A rich textile heritage

The Colne Valley's rich textile heritage is evident as soon as you arrive, characterised by weavers’ cottages set into hill sides, and converted mills that tower over the landscape. But, don't be fooled, the Colne Valley is full of thoroughly modern villages, where contemporary wares sit perfectly alongside quirky events, country ales and village stores.

See long-forgotten skills recreated at the recently refurbished Colne Valley Museum, dedicated to textile history. Try out Victorian children’s games or catch a craft demonstration such as bread-baking, weaving or spinning.

The great outdoors

Butterley, Sparth and Hill Top Reservoirs and Cellars Clough Fishery are popular walking and fishing spots. Day visitors can play at Marsden Golf Club. Scammonden Valley has a great footpath network and is home to a beautiful range of upland habitats. New to climbing? Try the climbing boulder at Crow Lane Recreation ground in Milnsbridge. For more experienced climbers, Pule Hill is a great rock climb; a popular paragliding and hang-gliding spot too.
