Known as the gateway to the Dales, Richmond was founded by the Normans in 1071. It’s now a bustling market town, next to Richmond Castle. The are many places called Richmond around the world, but this one is the original.

Please note that Richmond is the postal town for most of Swaledale (right down from the very top – around 20 miles away) so some hotels listed as “Richmond,” are some distance away, for example, those in Reeth. Those with a postcode beginning DL10 4 are likely to be actually in the town itself, or very close (and you can see those which are on the marketplace from the image).

Many of Richmond’s hotels in the town are traditional Yorkshire Inns, and offer that most uniquely Yorkshire experience: a public bar, wonderful food, fine accommodation, and hospitality all under one roof. This is a real Yorkshire experience, in the original Richmond.
