Had to slight detour to see this Standing stone in the Rudston church yard. This is the tallest standing stone in the uk. There was a Roman Villa found nearby which is likely why there is a Roman sarcophagus burial also in the far corner of the church yard. I have read that when the Standing stone was examined it is as deep as it is tall at over 7.5 metres in each direction. Was a delight to see.

Really interesting place to visit. The church is very well looked after and well worth a look inside. The graveyard is a real wonder, I saw graves dating back to 18th century. Also Roman burial site, WW11 graves.

This impressive Neolithic monolith—the largest of its kind in the UK—is a remarkable piece of ancient history. Situated within a churchyard, it is freely accessible to the public with no entry fees or tickets required. Its setting adds to the sense of historical significance, offering visitors a quiet and contemplative space to appreciate its scale and craftsmanship. A worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in prehistoric landmarks. Parking is available by way of free roadside parking, however the roads surrounding are typical narrow, country roads and so would be at the owners own risk.

Located on the site of churches for over 1000 years (there is also a Roman burial in the churchyard) the stone is about 8m high with a lead top (put there about 200yr ago to protect from weathering) it's believed to be about 8m deep too. A mystical religious site going back thousands of years (Christians always put a church on others religious sites to claim them, like how a dog marks their spot) the church is lovely too, open through the day, with historical information on the area, there are Roman and neolithic remains in the area too. It's free to access.
