South Cliff Gardens is a real asset to Scarborough stretching, as it does, from the Spa Footbridge all the way along the Esplanade to the far end by Shuttleworth Gardens and a view of the beginning of the Cleveland Way. These are public gardens, beautifully restored and maintained and containing several smaller gardens, including the Rose Garden and the Italian Gardens, and also the Click Cafe and the Holbeck Clock Tower. There are lots of paths and steps from the seashore level up to the Esplanade- it’s not for anyone who is unfit. There are some paths marked as suitable for wheelchairs but I think this very much depends on the size and type of wheelchair. From the Italian Gardens there’s a great view down to the Star Map and from anywhere along the upper gardens you’ll get a fine view across to the Castle. Wear sensible shoes, take your time and if you are at all unsteady on your feet use a walking pole or stick if attempting steeper paths. There is also a tramway if you want an easier journey from top to bottom.
