Alf Wight, better known by his pen name James Herriot, was a beloved British veterinarian and author. Although he was born in Sunderland, his connection to Yorkshire is strong as he spent most of his life working as a vet in the county. His books, which are based on his experiences as a vet, have become classics and are still enjoyed by readers today. Fifty years ago Alf Wight (aka James Herriot) released his first book, If Only they Could Talk, based on his life as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales. Since then his tales from the Dales have sold 80 million copies worldwide and a hit TV series started in the ‘70s.
