Ackworth School Estates Ltd

B&B, Guest House or Inn

Ackworth School has two boarding houses – Girls’ School House and Boys’ School House. The main aim of both of the houses is to provide a ‘home from home’ – a place where boarders can relax, feel safe, enjoy each other’s company, or at times find a quiet place to wind down or work, and somewhere where they can find support and help if they have any concerns or worries.
Both ‘houses’ are located in the main school building which therefore provides a safe and secure environment whilst also giving easy access to all facilities including the dining rooms and class rooms. All doors to the boarding houses are secured by key pad locks so restricting access only to residents. There are common rooms within each house and also shared common rooms so that students from both can relax together after school and after prep.
Each boarding house has modern study bedrooms, which are comfortable and well equipped; a number have ‘en-suite’ facilities. The rooms sleep between two and four boarders with those in the upper years having the smaller formats to allow them more privacy and quiet - important with GCSE, AS and A Level exams. Each of the boarding houses has a kitchen so that students can make themselves drinks and snacks and there are further areas in the houses where students can relax with televisions, DVD’s, books, games and pool tables.
Each boarding house has a team of resident staff attached to it and is run by a resident House Parent – Christopher Bailey in Boys’ School House and Claire Cougan in Girls’ School House. There is a member of staff and a matron on duty every day and this staff presence in each boarding house means that there is always someone available for support or help if required. If a student is ill during the school day there is an on-site health centre with a school doctor and nurse.
Most importantly the houses are happy, safe and comfortable environments which give the students the support they need to make the most of their time at Ackworth and to help them achieve as much as they can in all areas of life, both academically and beyond the classroom in our wide co-curricular programme. Whilst words and photos can show much of this, the best way to experience our boarding is to visit the School and the boarding houses and to talk to our students who live here during term time.
