A country inn brimming with character, honest food, thoughtful vintages and a down to earth charm. In the picturesque village of Hetton near Skipton this ancient drovers' inn is with its ancient oak beams and Yorkshire range is the quintessential Yorkshire Dales inn.
Food is of the essence here. A reputation for culinary excellence in both the bar and restaurant is matched by the well kept beers on the bar and extraordinary choice of wines which lean towards the owners' passion for Burgundy. Always evolving, strong on seasonality, this is classic British/French food, with round the world influences, cooked The Angel way; flavours dancing off the plate. The Angel's Moneybag, a delight of a crispy pastry filled with queenies, prawn, salmon and smoked fish with a julienne of peppers and courgette and a hint of tarragon on a pool of lobster sauce is the signature starter (there would be a riot if it was withdrawn from the menu) offered alongside perhaps Queenie Scallops, Bouillabaisse, Posh Mushrooms on Toast. 55 day Himalayan salt aged ribeye, Tandoori Hake, Jacksons of Cracoe award winning sausages, melt in the mouth duck breast, fish of the day and more. From light and airy to rich and gooey, puddings are just as tempting and the outstanding choice of cheeses are from the award winning Courtyard Dairy.
There are nine heavenly bedrooms. Over the road and just next door. Each is designed to surprise and enchant with a dose of Dales' charm and a sprinkling of bliss. Five individual bedrooms, each quite different and a couple with their own sitting room, are in Fell View Barn. The name gives it away - magnificent views over Rylstone Fell and beyond. In Sycamore Bank, just next door, is a cottage conversion with four genteel bedrooms - a quirky quartet with lashings of countryside luxury. Whichever, discover all the little extras that make the difference - fresh lemon and milk for your cup of tea and an honesty bar...
And the wine cave. A rustic take on French farmhouse dining in the romantic setting of a converted barn. For gathering, feasting, sharing and meeting; the perfect venue for a wonderfully intimate wedding.
Surrounded by breathtaking Dales scenery The Angel is the perfect spot to relax and recharge the batteries. There are glorious countryside walks from the doorstep or it's just a short drive to some of the Dales' popular hot spots such as Malham Cove, Grassington and the Bolton Abbey Estate. The historic market town of Skipton is close by offering plenty to occupy visitors with its magnificent fully roofed medieval castle, ancient church, canal where boats jostle with the wildfowl, and narrow alleyways to dip into and discover individual shops and cafés. Plus it's market day on the High Street 4 days each week.
And after all the walking and sightseeing return to The Angel for a welcome cup of Yorkshire tea and freshly baked scone - pure bliss.
