Overview & description

With 13 weeks until the big day, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet York is gearing up for Christmas with the return of the award-winning Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, which arrives at the centre on Saturday 19th November and runs until Monday 2nd January.

2016 sees the 12th season of the much-loved ice rink and fun fair, voted Visitor Attraction of the Year (under 50,000 visitors) at last year’s Visit York Awards. Having also won in 2012 and 2010, Winter Wonderland is cementing its place as one of York’s favourite Christmas experiences. The perfect festive day out for all the family, where visitors can find over 120 designer, premium and high street brands at up to 60% off the RRP.

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland is home to the north of England’s largest outdoor ice rink, The Ice Factor, complete with a 30ft high Christmas tree and a Christmas village, this year inspired by Narnia.

PapaKitchen is the new Alpine-themed café at The Ice Factor, which will offer an après-skate ambience of rustic wooden tables and benches complete with cosy furs and the warming scent of Glühwein. With a menu of delicious homemade fare – including hot dogs with Scandi-relish - and a licensed bar serving mulled wine, ales and hot chocolate, it’s the ultimate location for warming up after a session on the ice.

For the very first time, the funfair this year is solely comprised of vintage rides from the golden era of fairgrounds. Visitors can enjoy rare rides like the Brooklands Dodgems from 1937, a stunning 1930s Chair o Plane and a Ghost Train dating from the 1950s. The funfair will also include an exhilarating 1936 Speedway and two exquisite children’s rides, a 1947 Muffin the Mule Aerodrome and Hush Hush the Monorail, made in 1933. The rides have all been lovingly restored over the last few years by a team of local craftspeople.

Mike Thomas, Centre Manager for McArthurGlen Designer Outlet York, said; “We’re always thrilled to welcome Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland back to the centre, and with the added excitement of such an amazing array of vintage rides, this year is going to be more magical than ever! We look forward to welcoming the families of Yorkshire and beyond to kick off their Christmas season in style.”

Of course, no Winter Wonderland would be complete without Santa. Guests will find his log cabin set at the end of a Christmas tree walk, with his giant reindeer and sleigh.

James Cundall, CEO of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions says, “The team behind Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland strive every year to introduce something new to the event or improve on it in some way. This year the Vintage Funfair is our showpiece – it comprises some outstanding rides which are not only a visual treat but which stand up every bit as well as modern rides in delivering speed, thrills and surprises. In fact our Speedway can go so fast we rarely get it up to its 10th gear!”

The Ice Factor will be open daily from Saturday 19th November 2016 until Monday 2nd January 2017, with tickets for a one-hour skating session priced at £10.45 for adults and £9.45 for children. Family packages are available for families of three, four or five people. Special packages are also available for parties, schools, clubs and youth groups, with discounts applying to groups of 20 or more.

Booking is recommended for skating at The Ice Factor, as well as for visits to Santa’s Grotto. Tickets for both, as well as tickets for the funfair, can also be purchased on site. For full details of prices and times visit or call 01653 619169.
