Bingley Five Rise Locks

Historic Site/Structure, Museum/Heritage/Gallery/Visitor Centre

Description

Bingley Five Rise Locks are one the most awesome features on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. They are the steepest staircase locks on the longest canal in the country. This is why they are one of the seven wonder of the waterways.

The five rise locks host stunning views of the Aire Valley; visit the viewing area at the top to take in the scenery. At the top of the flight there is a café and a private mooring site for boats. Lock keepers are on duty during the summer months to help boats through the locks and monitor water levels. Have a chat to them if you have any questions when you are visiting.

A little further down the towpath, approx. 0.5km and closer to Bingley, you will find a flight of three rise locks.

Watch the boats come though the locks whilst you are visiting – it can take up to 45 minutes to go up the locks and 30 minutes to go down.
