For an interesting day out visit Aldborough Roman Town. One of the most northern administrative and trading centres in the Roman Empire. Aldborough (then Isurium Brigantum) was the 'capital' of the Romanised Brigantes, the largest tribe in Britain.
One corner of this fascinating part of Yorkshire history is laid out in the English Heritage 'Aldborough Roman Town' site amid a Victorian arboretum. Two mosaic pavements can be viewed in their original positions.
The site's recently updated and fascinating museum has an outstanding collection of Roman finds.
