DalesBus provides a great way to get into and around the Yorkshire Dales National Park and neighbouring Nidderdale and Forest of Bowland Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. DalesBus is one of Britain’s most successful networks of weekend leisure bus services. Established over ten years ago, it has featured on BBC’s Countryfile, and our Northern Dalesman service was the star of the BBC 4 slow TV programme All Aboard the Country Bus. Our services offer splendid views of the surrounding countryside – just sit back and enjoy the ride! There’s no need to book in advance to use most services, and clean well-behaved dogs are welcome too!
DalesBus has developed an integrated network of about fifteen bus routes during the summer months providing access for visitors into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale and Forest of Bowland AONBs mainly on Sundays and Bank Holidays from major conurbations in the surrounding areas including the nearby towns and cities of Leeds, Harrogate, Bradford, Manchester, Wakefield, Burnley, Lancaster, Middlesbrough and York as well as providing a much needed local weekend transport for local residents.
With a range of flexible ticketing offers, passengers can transfer from one bus service to another at key interchanges including Otley, Ilkley, Skipton, Pateley Bridge, Grassington and Hawes as well as meet trains on the celebrated Leeds-Settle-Carlisle line to the west, the Leeds-Lancaster-Morecambe line to the south, and the East Coast mainline to the east of the National Park and local train services from Leeds and Bradford to Ilkley and Skipton, making it easier to explore all parts of the Dales and AONBs.
If you are a walker and car driver then DalesBus offers the opportunity of some great linear walks. Why not park your car at one of the car parks outside the National Park or AONBs, catch the bus to the start point of your walk and walk back to your car? Experience that sense of achievement, doing your bit for the environment but also knowing your car is there waiting for you to get home! Or why not leave your car at home and take the bus?
During the winter months, DalesBus provides a more limited service with five bus routes providing access to Upper Wharfedale, Wensleydale and Nidderdale mainly on Sundays.
Free guided walks accessible from the bus and train network are organised by the Friends of DalesBus (www.dalesbusramblers.org.uk) and the Friends of the Settle Carlisle line (www.foscl.org.uk/guided-walks).
Details of guided walks are also available from many tourist information offices and other outlets.
