Overview & description

Seven Jazz Leeds are an award winning jazz promoter based in the Chapel Allerton (LS7) area of Leeds, hence the "Seven" in our name. Our main venues are “Seven Arts” on Harrogate Road and “Inkwell” on Potternewton Lane. We also programme the “Village Jazz” part of the Chapel Allerton Festival. In 2016 we won the Parliamentary Jazz Award at the House of Commons and are now established on the national and international jazz circuit.

Seven Arts, our main venue. It has excellent acoustics and a cafe with a wide range of drinks and food. It is located on Harrogate Road close to Chapel Allerton centre with good public transport to Leeds Centre and free local parking. Our other, smaller, venue is Inkwell Arts, not far from Seven Arts on Potternewton Lane, also in Chapel Allerton.

Our programme features around 70 jazz concerts every year with an eclectic mix of contemporary styles, but all high quality and accessible. We put on jazz every Sunday afternoon between 1.30pm and 4.15pm with the best of the rich and creative elements of the Yorkshire jazz scene. Some of these are totally acoustic "unplugged" gigs that feature live unamplified jazz. Our evening concerts are on Thursdays and these showcase national and international jazz stars. We make sure young local bands are heard through our "Seven Jazz Introduces" series that support the main evening acts.

We support jazz education - our programme of instrumental workshops are designed for people who want to learn more about the music or to play with other musicians. We encourage musicians of all ages and abilities to play or sing at our "Jazz Cafe" sessions with support from high quality local rhythm sections. Our choir, the "Seven Jazz Voices Choir" meet in Inkwell, tutored by Tessa Smith and have performed widely, at Seven Arts, Garforth Arts Festival and venues in Leeds City Centre

We want people to come and enjoy the music and have fun - our afternoon concerts are family friendly and kids under 16 can come to our Sunday concerts free of charge. Our concerts are reasonably priced and we also have concessions for people who are unwaged and for students and have a loyalty card for our Sunday gigs. Full time students can get tickets to any of our concerts for £5 .We have an online sales service for tickets.

Seven Jazz is run by volunteers - the people who help and you will see at gigs are Phil Green, Steve Crocker, Jeff Hewer, Rosemary Holmes, Steve Ross, Will Powell, Trevor Prinn, Tony Walsh, and Jean Watson. Our Saturday workshops are run by a range of top Leeds jazz educators including guitarist Dom Moore and trumpeter Tom Sharp. We also have lots of people who just come and support us by coming to the club and enjoying the music. We are always looking for help - just come to one of our gigs and offer!
