Background/Who We Are
Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Shop was established in 1989 and is based in the wide Yorkshire Dales valley of Wensleydale, part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Originally located on farms at Spennithorne, then Garriston, our wool shop has now moved to the centre of the popular market town of Leyburn in lower Wensleydale.
Origins of the Wensleydale Sheep
The Wensleydale Sheep originated in 1839 with Blue Cap, a large Leicester tup or ram crossed with a local Mug or Teeswater. Blue Cap, a sheep of immense strength and character had a very dark head and skin but his fleece was white, lustrous and curly, and the amazing Wensleydale was born. The rare breed Wensleydale Sheep produce the finest and most valuable lustre longwool in the world.
Our yarn is commissioned by ourselves and is worsted spun, dyed and balled locally in West Yorkshire, by craftsmen of the traditional Yorkshire woollen trade, and has received the British Wool International Quality Award.
The long, soft, silky curls of the Wensleydale characterise the nature of all our own brand yarns, available in Aran, Double Knitting (DK) and 4 Ply which drape and dye like silk. Shades run through a spectrum of the gentlest country hues to jewel brilliance. Many of our yarn colours are named after local places.
You can enjoy creating your own garment or one of our team of local knitters would be happy to knit one just for you. We offer a wide range of exclusive Sheep Shop knitting patterns created to compliment the fine Wensleydale wool. We also stock a range of hand-knit garments and woollens in various sizes, as well as knitting kits, fleece, combed tops, sheepskins, throws and wool related gifts. As well as our worsted spun yarn we also hand dye some of our fleece and combed tops in vibrant colours.
