Ripon Courthouse Museum

Museum/Heritage/Gallery/Visitor Centre

Step Back In Time – and follow the story of poverty, crime and punishment.

Desperation often led the poor to a life of petty crime – and the punishments were cruel and severe.

Discover what life was like in the workhouse, prison and courthouse.  Find out why people ended up here ad what happened to them.

Visit all three museums to walk in the footsteps of past generations.

This elegant Liberty Courthouse remains virtually unchanged since it was built in 1830.

Explore the Jury Room with its ceremonial pair of halberds and library of 18th and 19th century manuals which contained advice for the magistrates.  The Retiring Room contains a gallery of portraits of many past magistrates.

But it’s the Courtroom where the stories of the past criminals who once stood in the dock are told.
