Stillingfleet Lodge Garden is a quintessentially English garden, managed to be as wildlife friendly as possible. It is our family garden, lovingly planted-up over 40 years and now comprises a series of small gardens surrounding our family home, opening out into an avenue that leads to a wild flower meadow. The planting emphasises a cottage garden style and every part is maintained organically. We purposefully leave seed heads as food for birds and limit cutting back to provide habitat for insects.
For visitors who prefer more formal gardens we have incorporated an elegant rill garden with minimalistic planting.
The perennial wild flower meadow is a haven for native plants and wildlife and we encourage visitors to sit and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere around the naturally planted pond. In keeping with our ethos of sustainability, we now have an organic vegetable plot, which is very much our kitchen garden. Together with the orchard and our rare breeds of poultry the garden provides us with food throughout the year.
Our plant Nursery specialises in unusual perennial plants, many of which can be seen in the garden. We are pleased to offer you one of the largest ranges of hardy Geraniums in the UK and also have a huge selection of plants that thrive in the shade, such as Pulmonaria and Brunnera.
We run a series of workshops in the garden throughout the year: some are practical gardening courses and others are more artistic, using the garden as focus for the art. Throughout the summer we have a series of Art in the Tea Room exhibitions and sculptures can be found in the garden.
The Stillingfleet Lodge Garden Tea Room offers delicious homemade cakes and refreshing teas or coffees. The Tea Room is in our lovely renovated barn and is a wonderful place to sit with your refreshments, admire the art exhibitions, flick through magazines and gardening books and shelter, if it’s raining! Visitors are welcome to come to the Tea Room, without paying to go around the Garden.
The main event of our year is the Wildlife Day – this will be held on 28th June 2020. This is a family day where we celebrate the range of wildlife in the garden. There are activities running all day, including spider walks, bug hunts and owl pellet dissection, as well as information stands.
The garden is open every Wednesday and Friday, from 1st April to 30th September and Saturdays and Sunday opening is on the 1st and 3rd of the month only.
