The Machin family have been farming the land that The Balloon Tree sits on for over 35 years. In this time, we have developed a great reputation for our homegrown fruit and vegetables – specifically our Asparagus and Strawberries.
Our pick your own season starts in May with our strawberry crop, this is usually accompanied with homegrown rhubarb, and the season ends in October with our pick your own pumpkins. Over recent years the demand for field grown pumpkins has grown, and we find ourselves increasing what we plant year on year.
Through the season pickers have available, raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, blueberries, blackberries, peas and broad beans.
Coming to the pick your own fields is a great way to educate younger generations as to all the hard work that goes into growing the fruit and veg that ends up on our kitchen tables. We are an active farm that supplies our attached farm shop, so visitors frequently see Farmer Will and his team grafting away in the fields.
New for 2021 we have the addition of the “Track Out Back” where kids can take a drive in our little jeeps around our custom-built track. This is aimed at children aged 5 to 12, however, when “test driving” we all got a kick out of it too!
The Farm Shop is well stocked and serves as a platform for local suppliers of high-quality produce to showcase their wares. In addition to our fresh fruit and vegetable department; we house a variety of jams and chutneys, fresh baked breads, rare breed meats, locally sourced wines and spirits as well as a deli counter which is replenished daily with light bites to take away.
After an afternoon out in the fields everyone will have earned a visit to The Balloon Tree Café. Here we serve a diverse menu of breakfast, sandwiches, toasties, lunches, salads and if you come on a Sunday, a classic Sunday roast complete with homemade Yorkshire Pudding’s and Gravy. If you are just after a coffee and cake stop, our in-house Bakery has assembled a range of homecooked treats to suit any taste; pair this with a freshly ground coffee or loose-leaf tea and you are onto a winner.
