We help create opportunities for members working collectively and individually and engage closely with the local community through open studio events, creative projects and education courses.
Formed in 1989, Northlight has recently taken huge steps to enlarge its activity. With the aid of an Arts Council grant we have moved to new, much improved premises, incorporating a gallery, dedicated ceramics area, an outdoor courtyard and improved access. We have increased our resident artist numbers to 26 and have now become a fully fledged artist co-operative. We have now introduced an associate member scheme.
Studio sizes vary from 6.4m2 to 20 m2 with the opportunity to share. Most of our spaces are 'open plan', contributing to our co-operative spirit. Five studios in our annex unit have lockable doors. Studio members can share kitchen, computer, internet and photography and information resource facilities. Studio space in Hebden Bridge is in high demand and we have a growing waiting list. We invite committed artists and craftspeople to apply to join our waiting list. Please email for an application form.
In our new flexible ground floor area, we are now developing an education strand to our activity - giving the larger community the chance to benefit from the considerable skills of our 26 artists.
Our first term has been a great success with five regular courses running: Art for the Terrified, Painting and Drawing, Bookbinding and Writing for the stage and Creative Textiles. These courses are set to continue into 2009 with the addition of new courses and day workshops. Places limited so book now!
The Back Door gallery showcases both the work of Northlight artists and artists living in the creative hot spot of the Upper Calder Valley.
