Overview & description
Scarborough’s local theatre with an international reputation.
The Stephen Joseph Theatre is a cultural icon of the Yorkshire region, providing the highest possible standard of theatrical experience for audiences worldwide. Over 100,000 people visit the SJT each year and many more experience its work on tour in the UK or abroad.
Widely known for its world premieres of almost all of Alan Ayckbourn’s 75 plus plays, it shows a year-round programme of drama, music, comedy, dance, poetry and more.
Housed in a former Odeon Cinema with many original art deco features, the Stephen Joseph Theatre boasts two auditoria - The Round, a 404-seat theatre in the round and The McCarthy, a 165-seat endstage which doubles as a cinema.
In addition, the building houses a shop, gallery, restaurant and bar, and hosts events such as weddings, charity events, business lunches, conferences and private cinema hire.
