Kelham Island Museum

Museum/Heritage/Gallery/Visitor Centre

Kelham Island Museum is the showcase of Sheffield’s industrial story, from early industrialisation to modern times where ‘Made in Sheffield’ remains a mark of quality known worldwide.

Enjoy a great family day out full of nostalgia and innovation as our interactive galleries follow the growth of the Steel City, from light trades and skilled workmanship to mass production. Learn what it was like to live and work in Sheffield during the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Era and throughout two world wars to discover how the art of steel making forged both the city of today and the world!

Highlights include our reconstructed ‘Little Mesters’ street where you can see two of the last remaining Little Mesters, Pete Goss and Stan Shaw, in residence at their workshops. Don’t miss the mighty 12,000hp River Don Engine, the most powerful working steam engine remaining in Europe, in steam every Monday - Thursday (12pm & 2pm) and Sunday (12pm, 2pm & 4pm).

Our must-see galleries include the Charlesworth Transport Gallery, home to the Sheffield Simplex - a car built to rival the Rolls-Royce, and the National Fairground Archive display of exciting archive footage revealing the local history of fairgrounds and entertainment.

The Hawley Gallery contains over 100,000 objects that make up the internationally renowned Hawley Tool Collection, an important display of tool making, cutlery manufacture and silversmithing tools assembled over a working lifetime by Sheffield tool retailer Ken Hawley.

Youngsters can explore their industrial heritage through our hands-on galleries with the chance to size up to the world’s biggest bomb or dress up as a buffer girl or grinder! The Melting Shop Children’s Play Area is open every Sunday and throughout school holidays where kids will love being melted like iron in our swirling ball pool before being poured, rolled, hammered and forged into an imaginary steel product, becoming anything from a fork to a submarine!*

Visit our Museum Shop selling a wide range of ‘Made in Sheffield’ books and gifts - perfect for that unique gift or simply Sunday browsing with free admission to our shop and Furnace Café.

We bring learning to life with a Living History educational programme packed with cross-curricular themes and activities attracting schools and group visits. Looking for corporate hospitality with a distinct Sheffield flavour? Kelham Island Museum can be hired for evening receptions, social gatherings, meetings and conferencing, providing a unique space for temporary exhibitions or bespoke events.

Our exciting family events programme includes the delightful 1940’s ‘Holidays at Home’ Vintage Fayre and a warm Dickensian welcome awaits all at our popular Victorian Christmas Market, now in its 19th year and attracting over 12,000 visitors to enjoy festive family fun and shopping with over 100 markets stalls, traditional skills and entertainment.

Kelham Island Museum is one of 3 heritage sites in the city that make up Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust (SIMT) alongside Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and Shepherd Wheel.
